AAARFF - Alaska Arctic Awesome Remote Fly Fishing offers five types of unique kayak fly fishing adventures in 2012. Our 2013 destinations are currently in the works, as we will be adding some very scenic Arctic river trips designed for great kayak fly fishing with great photo opportunities. Those who do not desire to fish but want great photos and memories that will last a lifetime are welcome along on these trips.

All rivers will be slow Class 1 & Class 2, meaning no whitewater.
I am proud to say that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have approved AAARFF as the only licensed Fishing Outfitter to take fly fishing only customers into Peter -Schrader Lakes. The U.S. FWS ANWR have also set a strict limit of only one, 7 day adventure a year limited to 4 fishers to protect this very fragile resource and environment. Until now, they have never let any outfitter to bring clients to theses very remote lakes nestled in the middle of the Wildlife Refuge of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

One of the main reasons the FWS has approved AAARFF to bring fly fishing customers into such sensitive areas is my commitment to the standards of maintaining the fishery and fragile tundra plants. Some of my understanding of the arctic eco-system comes from working across the arctic for years with drilling companies under people who have helped make the North Slope oil field the cleanest in the world. In fact I’ve worked under the only man who ever drilled the only well back in the 1960’s in what is now ANWR.

I also believe why AAARFF was allowed to be the first Fishing Outfitter to bring people into this part of the Wildlife Refuge is my commitment to protecting the fish stock that takes decades to grow in the cold waters. In fact the larger fish have taken close to 40 years to get to the large size they are and I am committed to protect them during this sport.

Few fishers who venture to fish the cold waters of Alaska, along with many of the young guides who venture up for the summer work from the lower 48 even realize the rainbow trout you catch and hold out of the water for minutes just for a photo might have taken 15 years to get to over 10 pounds. Some of those fish might even be as old as the young guide who allows the fish to become oxygen starved right when it needs it most, after the fight it gave you. That act alone has greatly increased the chance you have released a trophy that will die. You likley won't see it later laying on the river bed as you jet passed it the next day at 20 plus miles an hour.

Even fewer fewer dedicated fly fishing Outfitters venture into the remote arctic. When you are planning to take fishing trips to remote places in Alaska, you should first check with Alaska Fish and Game about outfitters who claim to provide fishing trips in ANWR and many National Parks and National Forests and other areas. If you do so, you will find that many are not Licensed Outfitters, they simply tell you to bring along your fishing gear, waders and an Alaskan fishing license.

This means if you cast from a boat they are in or near them on shore, they are violating laws. It also means they really do not know how to fish and they basically provide people with views of nature. Do you really think they can offer you good fishing?

AAARFF’s Pike, Lake Trout & Char remote lake kayak fly fishing adventure is located at the headwaters of the Toklat River north of Denali National Park. This is scheduled for the start of the pike season in a lightly fished lake soon after ice out at the beginning of the season. This lake system produces good trophy sized fish.
This is the best time to fish this lake for a variety of both fish, as the pike season is just opening and the lake has usually been ice free for several weeks.

The pike have either spawned or are currently doing so. Either way they are along the edges easily reached by AARFF’s kayaks. The warm summer air makes it an enjoyable time to fish and the water temperature has warmed just enough so that early and late in the day larger char and lake trout will be cruising the drop offs and pike are along the shallows. The water also hasn’t warmed enough to put both into deeper water making it an excellent fly fishing trip.

AAARFF’s
Coastal Glacial Schools are designed to instruct novice to average fly fishers interested in learning how to explore Alaska on their own or a simple relaxing vacation with fantastic scenery and fishing for pink and silver salmon on light fly rods. We go over EZ fly tying to how to get fish home (the salmon stock is no where near in need of catch & release status). If you have never fished Alaska's Coastal waters and streams with a kayak, you can learn something while having a great adventure.

AAARFF's Fly in to Wild Lake right as the ice goes out & Northern Lights at the end of the Arctic season are designed for average anglers interested in great fishing in the foothills of the Brooks Range below the Gates of the Arctic Park. This trip is for those who desire to experience Alaska's Arctic. We practice catch and release on these to help maintain the fishery.

AAARFF's Wild Lake adventure is when the 9 months of ice has left exposing the surface to hungry lake trout, char, pike and grayling are actively cruising the still cool surface waters before the endless sunlight warms it and sends them deeper.

AAARFF's Northern Lights adventure is when the nights are getting dark again, the surface waters cooling and the northern lights appearing adding even more splendor to the foothills of the Brooks Range. The sounds of geese and calling moose in the air the lake trout, char, pike and grayling are once again back on the surface cruising along the lake edge looking for substantial meals.

AAARFF’s Peter – Schrader Lakes Remote Fly In Adventure is designed for the average to expert fly fishers desiring both fantastic fishing and scenery that can only be experienced at this alpine arctic lake system. Peter – Schrader Lakes are located on the very remote northern Arctic Ocean side of the Brooks Range, which is the Continental Divide in Alaska. AAARFF is the only Fishing Outfitter allowed to bring fishing clients into this fragile system. I was the first FWS has ever approved to bring people into this fragile watershed of the Refuge. We will be fly fishing barbless hooks during this kayak trip to preserve the large fish, as well as move the camp several times to preserve the fragile tundra vegetation.

This pair of 4,912 acre lakes are also in the middle of the largest Refuge in the United States with 19,286,722 acres. The location of ANWR itself means the whole Refuge receives less than 2,000 annual visitors, and 99% of those visit river systems or the coastal caribou calving grounds and do not even fish. You should go your whole stay without hearing a plane, except for the one that brings you in and out.

This is truely an adventure that takes you decades back into a pristine Alaskan Wilderness few have seen or will ever see. The scnery of the secluded valley in the middle of the Brooks Range will blow your mind and undoubtedly you will spend as much time taking photos of it, as fishing.
On this adventure over these large lake trout & char we will use only barbless hooks and practice inwater catch and release on these with no holding fish for photos to comply with FWS regulations to protect the fishery. If you are not happy with just taking photos of fish in the water as it comes along the kayak and underwater photos, please take another trip. These are the conditions established to even be able to fish here.

AAARFF's Alaskan Rainbow Trout Lake Kayak Adventures gives fine catch and release fly fishing for large rainbow and char in the scenery of the majestic Alaska Range and several glaciers. It’s also just a short flight from Anchorage which makes it much easier to arrive and start fishing than many other areas in the state. The entire area is private lands so the fishery has remained strong and we take care to release the rainbows and char.

We reserve the right to limit these trips to people less than 250 pounds and a chest size no larger than 52 inches so that life vests fit. One consideration is the remote nature of trips and your general health. While we have a satellite phone that works everywhere in Alaska, help is often at least hours away and you should be in good condition. Another consideration is the 250 pound limit of our lightweight cots used in remote trips, along with even being able to sit in the kayak.

We do not discriminate but have to follow equipment and Coast Guard Regulations. Even in inland waters such as lakes and rivers, the Coast Guard controls the waterways and Alaska Fish & Game enforce regulations. When we schedule our trips we need to account for the weight of gear used in our remote fly in trips also has limitations for air taxi load limits to make these trips affordable.

I myself have to watch my own weight to meet these requirements after a long winter and need to work out. You should also have fairly good upper body strength including your core or waist. While there are seats in the kayaks 4-8 hours of paddling and casting requires more than just office chair strength.
